Abstract
Clinical and bacteriological observation in cases with neonatal septicemia were carried out in the pediatric ward of Han-Il Hospital during the period from October 1962 to September 1965.
During the study period, a total 41 patients were experienced and the disease was characterized as commonly affecting the smaller infants and the male child. Gastrointestinal symptoms, jaundice and respiratory symptoms were the most common presenting symptoms, but fever and leukocytosis as a infectious manifestations were not remarkable.
Jaundice that developed in association with septicemia was most often observed in the patients of gram-negative septicemia. The elevation of serum bilirubin occured in both fractions, especially in indirect form, and served to distinguish this condition from physiologic jaundice.
Bacteriological study noted, the etiologic organism revealed a striking preponderance of gram-negative bacilli in 66%.
Treatment with kanamycin in combination with erythromycin or streptomycin according to the causative organism resulted the most favorable outcome.
In favorable individuals, the response to treatment revealed a rapid improvement in clinical symptoms and jaundice, but the overall mortality was 24.3%.
